Wound is defined as any type of damage or break on the surface of skin. It can occur due to trauma, skin conditions or an underlying disease. There are various types of wounds:
Open wounds: These have an exposed underlying tissue and is open to outside environment. Open wounds includes the following
- Incised wounds, which are caused by a clean sharp-edged object
- Lacerations are regular tear-like wounds caused by blunt trauma
- Abrasions where the superficial layer of skin is scraped off
- Puncture wounds, caused by an object puncturing theskin
- Penetration wounds, caused by an object, like knife, entering and coming out of skin
Closed wounds: These are not open to outside environment, and include-
- Hematomas, caused by damage to blood vessel causing blood to collect under the skin.
- Crush injuries
