Description
Heart, regarded as the seat of vitality and centre of emotions is the most vital organ of our body. Present at the center of circulatory system, it is a muscular organ of about size of your fist, and has the job of pushing blood through the long network of blood vessels throughout the body. Every day, the heart beats about 100,000 times, pumping about 3,800 litres of blood through the blood vessels. Studies suggest that two out of six people die from heart disease and six out of ten men over age 30 may have signs of heart disease. Numerous risk factors play a role in the development of heart disease which include smoking, physical inactivity, stress, obesity, high blood cholesterol, hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes. To reduce the risk of heart disease one has to minimise or avoid the risk factors such as giving up smoking, avoiding alcohol, restricting salt usage, limiting calorie intake, exercising regularly, reducing emotional stress, getting monitored periodically. The first step, is to lower one’s high blood pressure as, the higher the blood pressure, the greater is the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. If one has family history of high blood pressure, at an early age, such individuals should be advised to have their blood pressure monitored on a regular basis. A slow, complex disease, atherosclerosis usually starts in one’s childhood and progresses when people grow older, damaging the innermost layer of the arteries. In some people, it progresses rapidly, in their third decade.
