Browntop Millet :
Browntop Millet is one of rarest millets. It is gluten-free, has low GI and so its consumption reduces cholesterol. It is rich in fiber, iron, calcium, magnesium and many minerals and is gluten-free. Like all other millets, Browntop Millet is a storehouse of nutrition that is essential for optimal health and well-being. These tiny grains can deliver you a daily dose of protein, healthy fats, carbs and dietary fiber content. Apart from this, they are also a treasure trove of essential nutrients including calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, manganese, copper, sodium, and zinc. Regular addition of this nutrient-rich grain lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, digestive problems etc. Foxtail Millet : Foxtail Millet scientifically known as Setaria Italica, like other millets, it’s also a powerhouse of nutrition. Besides copious amounts of lysine, thiamine, iron and niacin, it also offers copious amounts of calcium. Little Millet : Little Millet is suitable for people of all age groups. This is grown throughout India and is a traditional crop. It is from Proso Millet family but the grains of Little Millet are much smaller than Proso Millet. Little Millets, with their low carbohydrate content, slow digestibility and low water-soluble gum content have been attributed to improve glucose metabolism. The grains release sugar slowly in the blood and slow down glucose absorption. Dietary fiber and resistant starch in these millets exhibit hypo-glycemic and hypo-lipidemic effects. Little Millet is fibrous millet, next to Barnyard Millet. According to research, some varieties of Kodo Millet and Little Millet have been reported to have 37% to 38% of dietary fiber, which is the highest among the cereals. Fiber helps maintain sound digestion and satiates hunger quickly. Like Foxtail Millet and Barnyard Millet, Little Millet is also high in Iron. It is high in fat, comprising majorly of the healthy polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The flavonoids present in the Little Millet act as antioxidants and play many roles in the body’s immune defence system. Although Little Millet is high in protein, it has a poor amino acid composition. Barnyard Millet : The Barnyard Millet (Echinochloa Frumantacea) is a wild seed and fastest growing crop, which can produce ripe grains within 45 days from the sowing time under optimal weather conditions. These millets have a hard cellulosic husk layer that humans cannot digest. The removal of the husk layer becomes the primary task of processing these grains. Once removed, the respective millets’ rice is attained. Small seeds of Barnyard Millet are processed on groats which are then used for preparation of different types of porridges. In India, cereal grains are not consumed during fasts which make, barnyard millets a popular ingredient during the fasting days. Barnyard millet has relatively low carbohydrate content (58.56%) having slow digestibility. The Barnyard Millet is a wholesome grain over and above common cereal grains like rice, wheat, rawa and by no means should be restricted to just the fasting days. Kodo Millet : It is a traditional food which closely resembles rice and helps in weight loss. It is easily digestible and is rich in phyto-chemicals and antioxidants which help in preventing different lifestyle diseases. Kodo Millet is a highly nutritious grain and an excellent substitute to rice and wheat. It has high protein content, low fat and very high fiber content. It is very easy to digest. It contains a high amount of lecithin and is excellent for strengthening the nervous system. Kodo Millet is rich in B vitamins, especially niacin, B6 and folic acid, as well as the minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium and zinc. The phosphorus content in Kodo Millet is lower than any other millet and its antioxidant potential is much higher than any other millet and major cereals. Kodo Millet contains no gluten and is good for people who are gluten intolerant.
